CITY COUNCIL CONDEMNED FOR SEEKING TO ARREST TRAVELLER PARENTS

The city council is being criticised for attempting to have the parents of several Traveller families arrested and their 28 children taken into care. The city council served a committal order on the families illegally camped at Carrowbrowne last Friday. A committal order allows for both parents of a child to be arrested and the child has to be taken into care as a result. The city council went before the Circuit Court on Wednesday seeking to have all the parents arrested and informed the HSE that 28 children may have had to be taken into care. However this application was struck out. A High Court hearing by the Traveller families to extend their time at Carrowbrowne was yesterday adjourned until next Tuesday. A spokesperson for the city council confirmed they sought the committal order and says they will now await the outcome of next week's High Court hearing.
