City officials should revisit the design of the Seamus Quirke Road before returning to the banks to seek an extra 3 million euro for the project over-run.

That's according to Galway Cycling Campaign who has described the new roadway as a "mess".

This week, councillors unanimously agreed to increase the city council loan for the scheme from five million to eight million euro.

The Galway Cycling Campaign says the current overrun could have been avoided if a simpler design, involving keeping the cycle lane at the level of the roadway, was fully considered.
