CALL FOR GARDA CAR DEPLOYMENT IN SOUTH CONNEMARA TO TACKLE RISING RURAL CRIME

Date Published: 15-Nov-2012
Concerns over rising rural crime in the South Connemara area have been brought before the Seanad this week.
The matter was raised by Galway West Senator Trevor O'Clochartaigh who called on Minister Alan Shatter to allocate an extra garda car to the area in light of a recent spate of robberies.
170 new garda vehicles are to come on stream nationally, with the first of these expected to come into operation in December and January.
This is on top of a batch of 42 vehicles already added in 2012.
However, Senator O'Clochartaigh has asked the Justice Minister to consider rural Connemara and its policing needs.
Speaking in reply, Minister Shatter said decisions on allocations and deployment will ultimately be made by the commissioner and divisional chief-superintendents.
