CALL FOR FREE PARKING IN LOUGHREA

Date Published: 16-Feb-2012

The Mayor of Loughrea Councillor Jimmy Curley is calling for free parking in the town every Saturday to support the local economy.

He told this week's meeting of the town council that seven shops had closed in Loughrea since Christmas with the loss of 20 jobs.

He's calling on Galway County Council to allow free parking on Saturday mornings in all carparks in the town.

However Director of Services Jim Cullen said revenue derived from paid parking was used for town enhancement and if there was a shortfall, it could be forced back on the ratepayers.
