Singer and actress Bronagh Gallagher and her eight-piece band will play Monroe’s Live on May 26 to celebrate the release of her self-titled second album.
She is perhaps best known for her role as the mouthy Bernie in Alan Parker’s film The Commitments and was part of the cast’s successful reunion tour last year. That film led to her securing roles in Pulp Fiction, The Phantom Menace and Sherlock Holmes.
However, she is also a fine singer with a gift for storytelling. In her new album the listener is introduced to stories and characters that go from Ireland to Dorset, Paris to Berlin and then on to California. Bronagh sings about magical nights and unfolding stories in the City of Angels, finally leading into the darkness and ganglands of Mexico City.
Bronagh’s Gallagher’s debut Precious Soul was released on the Salty Dog Records label and was produced by Damien Dempsey collaborator John Reynolds. That album featured collaborations with Brian Eno on the songs He Don't Love You and Hooks. Gallagher wrote most of the music on the album, played the drums and sang lead vocals.
For this new self-produced album, Bronagh has again penned all her own material, collaborating on some of the music writing with her cousin Caolan McLaughlin, and the band of musicians who accompanied her on this musical adventure.
Doors for the Galway show are 10pm, tickets €10.
