Bord Iascaigh Mhara withdraws from public meeting on Galway Bay fish farm
Staff of Bord Iascaigh Mhara have decided to withdraw from a planned public meeting about a fish farm in Galway Bay.
The meeting, organised by Sinn Féin, is taking place at the Westwood Hotel in Dangan this evening (25/4) at 8 o' clock.
It was supposed to be addressed by spokespeople from BIM, who would put forward their reasons for proposing the salmon fish farm off Inis Oírr.
They have consistently tried to reassure concerned parties that sea lice will not be an issue and that escapes from farm cages will not occur.
However the group, 'Galway Bay Against Salmon Cages' is opposed to the fish farm and says our marine eco-system needs to be protected.
Galway Sinn Féin Senator Trevor O' Clochartaigh says he's disappointed with BIM's decision to pull out of the public meeting.
However, in a statement to Galway Bay fm News, Bord Iascaigh Mhara claims that "the recent statements from some angling groups" have made it impossible for BIM to provide a public platform for the.
The statement goes on to say that BIM can't see the value of another debate with these groups.
