The HSE has ruled out closing 37 beds at St.Brigid's hospital in Ballinasloe as staff had initially feared.

Staff at the psychiatric hospital became concerned that all 37 beds would close at the admissions unit, with news the HSE was to close this number of acute beds across the region.

However, it is being mooted that at least 11 beds will be closed at St. Lukes ward leaving just six beds at the intensive care unit.

In a statement to Galway Bay fm news, the HSE West ruled out closing 37 beds but stopped short of stating how many, if any, would be closed.

Councillor Dermot Connolly says he has been advised beds will definitely close at St. Brigid's.
