There has been widespread grief in the community following the tragic deaths
A young girl who was critically injured in a road traffic collision in Co Cavan has died in hospital, just days after her mother was killed in the same crash.
The tragedy unfolded on the R162 at Corclare, near Shercock, Co Cavan, on Friday, July 24, when a car and a truck were involved in a collision shortly after 5pm.
The woman, aged in her 50s and driving the car, was pronounced dead at the scene. Her daughter was airlifted to Temple Street Children's Hospital in Dublin, where she had been receiving treatment for critical injuries.
The little girl sadly passed away on Tuesday afternoon, four days after the collision, leaving family, friends and the wider community devastated.
According to reports, the mother has been named locally as Nell Raven, while her daughter was named as 10-year-old Irena "Ira" Mereacre.
Tributes have been paid to both mother and daughter, with local organisations and members of the community expressing their heartbreak at the loss.
Ira attended Milltown National School and was well known locally, while her mother Nell, a journalist and writer originally from the UK, had recently become an Irish citizen.
Drumlane Gaelic Football Club posted a heartfelt message on social media where they said,
“On behalf of all at Drumlane GFC, we extend our deepest and most sincere sympathies to the Raven family on the very sad passing of Nell Raven and her beloved daughter Irena .
“At this profoundly difficult time, our thoughts and prayers are with their family, friends, and all who knew and cherished them. We stand in solidarity with you in your grief and extend our heartfelt support.
“May Nell and Irena rest together in eternal peace.”
Gardaí continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collision and have renewed their appeal for witnesses.
Road users who were travelling on the R162 between 4.45pm and 5.15pm on July 24, and who may have camera or dash-cam footage, are asked to contact Bailieborough Garda Station on 042 969 4570, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111 or any Garda station.
