Where is Ireland’s Jacinda or Sanna?

There was one chilling statistic from a speech littered with facts and figures that hit home this week in a briefing by the head of the Saolta Hospital regional group Tony Canavan. He told councillors that as many people died in just ten weeks of the third wave than lost their lives in the previous nine months.

All because we loosened the restrictions over Christmas. And we dithered – and still do - about closing our borders.

As I watched Taoiseach Micheál Martin implore us to stick to the restrictions for at least another nine weeks after confusing messages about school return dates, mass vaccination centres and then just blurting out there would be no restaurants or hotels open until the summer, I clearly got the sense that he’s lost us.

This was confirmed by a poll published on Tuesday which found that we are angrier and more frustrated now than at any stage of the pandemic. The survey of 2,200 adults across the country by Amárach Research for the Department of Health also found that 40 per cent believe the Government’s response is insufficient.

Oh for a Jacinda Ardern, the New Zealand prime minister who certainly didn’t dither closing her borders or opening up quarantine hotels. Or someone like 34-year-old Sanna Marin, who became  when she took the reins of the Finland government, leading a coalition made up of five parties - all led by women.
