Arts Week with Judy Murphy

Hybrid is the name of the game again this year for the Galway International Arts Festival which will run from August 28-September 18.  The good news for audiences is that there will be more live theatre and music, while an increased digital element will facilitate people who want to attend online.

Theatre shows include Enda Walsh’s Medicine, a co-production between GIAF and Landmark Production, which comes to Galway after its Edinburgh premiere. Clare Barrett, Aoife Duffin, Domhnall Gleeson and jazz drummer Sean Carpio star in Medicine, which examines social responses to mental health concerns in Walsh’s trademark style.. It’s in-person at the Black Box Theatre and will also be livestreamed and available on demand.

An adaptation of Blindness, the dystopian novel by Nobel prize-winner José Saramago, will be presented by London’s Donmar Warehouse at Druid Theatre.

Playwright Simon Stephens adapted the novel while actress Juliet Stevenson voices the Storyteller/Doctor’s wife in this story of the rise of an unimaginable global pandemic, which ends on a hopeful note. Described by The New York Times as ‘brilliant’, this theatrical sound installation will be an in-person show.

An Irish language adaptation of Samuel Beckett’s Happy Days – Leathanta Sona – will be performed live outdoors on Inis Oírr. Translated by Mícheál Ó Conghaile and directed by Sarah Jane Scaife, it features Bríd Ní Neachtain and Raymond Keane. An exhibition at the Áras Éanna Arts Centre will document its creation.

Attic Projects is a new work from Cork-born performer Luke Murphy. A sci-fi thriller, it’s part theatre, part dance. Its four episodes can be viewed separately or as a mini-series. It’s in-person at Nuns’ Island Theatre, as well as online and on demand.

Galway’s Decadent Theatre’s stage adaptation of Kevin Barry’s There Are Little Kingdoms, directed by Andrew Flynn, chronicles life in the urban centres of a changing land. There are uncertainties and absurdities but also laughter and compassion. It’s in-person at the Town Hall Theatre.
