There was some celebration had for the local lady who has left a huge mark on each pupil she has taught

A well-known former Galway teacher who inspired a past pupil of hers to follow in her footsteps has turned 100th.

Sister Consilio hit the milestone over the weekend with the people of Loughrea commenting in their droves to wish her the best on the amazing achievement.

One former student went that one step further though, revealing that Sister Consilio is actually the reason she chose the profession she did.

Michelle Kerrigan, a former pupil at St. Ita’s National School in Loughrea but now teaching at Drim National School, said: “Happy 100th Birthday to my former teacher, Sr. Consilio! You inspired me to become a teacher”.

She continued: “We were delighted to wish Sr. Consilio a Happy 100th Birthday, play a medley of tunes, sing some songs and dance for her on her special day. Sincere thanks to the staff at the Slieve Aughty unit at St. Brendan’s Nursing Unit, Loughrea for being so welcoming and accommodating. Thanks to Mr. Larkin for accompanying us on accordion. We had a great day. Happy Birthday Sr. Consilio.”

Another well wisher added: “Happy Birthday Sr. Consilio. Think of you often and my time at St. Ita's 1968 - 1971. You were so welcoming when I arrived from Canada. I have returned to Loughrea twice, but you were unavailable. Wishing you all the best.”

Last week, an inspirational Mayo lady living locally in Galway blew out her 100th candle also.

Headford’s Mary Murphy has proved that you’re only as young as you feel as she was pictured all smiles opening up her gifts on a magnificent milestone day.

Ireland’s newest centenarian has seen a lot of changes since 1926, especially around the neighbouring counties but has kept herself young thanks to the company she keeps around her now hometown in Headford.

Mary also had no problem answering the question on everyone’s lips: What was she going to do with the cheque she received from Catherine Connolly for 100 years around the sun.

Local Councillor Andrew Reddington, who visited Mary on the morning of her birthday, confirmed she did receive the €2,540 payment and the signed presidential letter, lodging the President’s cheque straight away.

He said: “I was delighted to call to Mary Murphy Bridge Street, Headford, who celebrates her 100th birthday today. Mary is living in the heart of Headford town, and she has seen many changes over the years. She is surrounded by a great family, great friends, and great neighbours. On behalf of everyone in County Galway and indeed her native Mayo Happy birthday Mary.”

The well wishes flooded in for Mary with one local saying: “What a milestone and achievement. Big congratulations to you Mary and wishing you many more years of health and happiness.

Another added: “Happy 100th Birthday Mary, you look amazing. Wishing you many more years of good health and happiness, enjoy your very special celebrations.”
