Singer’s latest release brings live passion to studio setting

He may be Limerick-born, but singer-songwriter Dylan Murphy has been at the centre of the Galway music scene for the past decade. His abilities across multiple genres and styles make his act one of the most enthralling and variable sets in the city – and his new single Vending Machine sees him break new ground in quality of both writing and recording.
Vending Machine is set for release on Friday week, September 20. It is his second offering this year and it comes from the perspective of the titular object.
With a string of successful singles and EPs already to his name, Dylan has dabbled in blues, folk, rock and country and has spent extended periods of time in recording studios.
With this track, he’s taken it up a notch – enlisting the production help of Dave Keary, Van Morrison’s long-time touring guitarist.
“Recording’s been a kind of fickle mistress for me,” Dylan admits.
“There’s a lot of pressure in terms of time constraints and who’s free when… Organising musicians is like herding cats so I took my time with this one. I chose Dave because he’s a guitar player as well, I’m a guitar player and I knew we’d be on the same page.
“I wanted a live feel and I didn’t want to do it to a click track. All producers insist you go for a click and I was like ‘No, it loses the energy’. With the single in particular, it slows down and it picks up and I didn’t want that to be dragging and dropping in Pro Tools.”
Energy is crucial to Dylan’s performances. Even when he is alone on stage, he brings a passion and liveliness to his act that few singer-songwriters can match. It may stem, in part, from his influences.
“In terms of singer-songwriters or just guys that really influenced me, it all comes back to Jack White and Seasick Steve,” he notes.
