Feast for the senses as TULCA opens

The annual TULCA Festival of Visual Arts opens this Friday, November 2.
Curated by Irish artist Eoin Dara, who is Head of Exhibitions at Dundee Contemporary Arts this year’s title is there’s nothing here but flesh and bone, there’s nothing more. It’s taken from George Michael’s 2006 song Outside.
Exhibitions will be held at venues throughout the city; the An Post Gallery, Galway Arts Centre, the Columban Hall, 126 Artist-Run Gallery, Nuns’ Island Theatre and Pálás Cinema.
Developed over the last year under different levels of lockdown between Ireland, Scotland and other countries, TULCA aims to generate conversations about intimacy, closeness and connection at a time when people are cautiously beginning to come together again.
Some of the artworks focus on bodies, exploring how we inhabit them and connect with other people (living and dead, real and imagined); how we care for our bodies; how we find grace within them; and how we love and nurture them.
Other projects go back in time, visiting overlooked stories and helping to shed light on our current condition.
This year’s contributors include artists, filmmakers, writers and poets. The exhibitions will include films, drawings, paintings, sculptures and installations. There are also soundscapes, love letters, talks, performances and workshops.
For TULCA 2021, artist Tonya McMullan has created a special scent which will be available at the entrance of each exhibition venue.
It’s a limited-edition perfume (and accompanying scented hand sanitiser) which people can sample and wear.
It contains water from the Corrib; honey from Galway bees; rainwater from Edinburgh; and a mix of hedione, geosmin, and isoamyl acetate. These were selected to encourage our bodies to consider togetherness and intimacy in new ways.
