Brits take Mrs Brown’s Boys to their heart. . . but why?

TV Watch with Declan Tierney

The Brits are a peculiar race of people. First of all they took to Father Ted, which it has to be said was utter thrash, and now they are heaping awards on Mrs Browne’s Boys, which has absolutely no redeeming features whatsoever. I often wonder do they be smashed out of their heads while watching these awful shows.

I happened to be watching one of these self-indulgent TV awards shows last week and it was a case of rounding up the usual suspects. Corrie won a pile of them, so too did Eastenders while Emmerdale rowed in with a few as well. Have you noticed the amount of ex-Corrie actors who are now appearing in Emmerdale? Scary.

These are long-running British soaps who have a loyal following and it is not surprising that they dominate these types of TV awards ceremonies but I nearly choked on my Scrumpy Jack to witness Brendan O’Carroll walk up to the stage to accept an award for what is easily the worst comedy show in history.

Brendan O’Carroll is not even a funny comedian. But he was given plenty of rope by RTE for some peculiar reason and turned a radio segment into a TV show which, bizarrely, has become a huge hit in Britain. I have come to seriously doubt the mentality of the television viewing public in that realm.

Over the years we have witnessed some absolutely shocking comedies that have emerged within this country. In more recent times Killinascully came to our screens and it was nothing short of diabolical. It could not generate a laugh if you paid it to do so.

But Mrs Browne’s Boys is even worse and is nothing short of an ego trip for the O’Carroll dressed up in a frock. How the Brits have taken to this is such a mystery that even Marple could not solve. I seriously think that they must be on something whacky while they are watching it.
