Conor Newell emerged as Sylane's match-winner deep into extra time, firing over the decisive score as they claimed the Division Three League title with a dramatic 4-20 to 2-25 victory over Padraig Pearses at Duggan Park on Sunday afternoon.

Both sides served up a thrilling contest in Ballinasloe on Sunday afternoon, with 80 minutes required to separate them. The Division Three Hurling League final had everything—51 scores, momentum swings, dramatic goals and a gripping finish—as supporters were treated to a superb spectacle.

Having dropped to the Premier Junior ranks, Sylane will be delighted to have silverware secured ahead of the championship and will hope to add to their trophy haul later this season. Padraig Pearses, meanwhile, can take plenty of positives from their display as they turn their attention to what promises to be a fiercely competitive Premier Intermediate Hurling Championship.

Sylane were inspired by captain Oran Martin, Player of the Match Tomás Keane and in attack byJohn Igoe and Sean Newell. For Padraig Pearses, Galway Under-20 hurler Jonah Donnellan was outstanding, while Dean Reilly and Cillian Fahy also produced impressive displays.

Goals from John Igoe, Paul Ronan and Keelan Creaven gave the north Galway side an early platform and helped them to a 3-5 to 0-11 half-time lead. Pearses remained firmly in contention thanks to the scoring exploits of Donnellan, Cillian Fahy and Dean Reilly, who combined for all 11 of their first-half points.

Pearses emerged strongly after the restart, with Donnellan reducing the deficit almost immediately. A Dean Reilly goal, followed by a Cillian Fahy free, edged the Ballymacward and Gurteen based club in front, 1-13 to 3-5, after 35 minutes. Sylane responded impressively through Darragh Mahon, goalkeeper Jake Hogan and Sean Newell to regain the advantage, leading 3-8 to 1-13 by the 40-minute mark.

The momentum then swung back in Pearses' favour as Donnellan, Conor Fahy and Diarmuid Fahy levelled matters before the experienced Emmet Ward slotting his shot past the Sylane goalkeeper. Donnellan quickly added another point to extend Pearses' lead to 2-17 to 3-8 after 50 minutes. Sylane refused to go away, however, with two Keelan Creaven points and another from Sean Newell cutting the gap to three entering the closing stages.

A slick attacking move brought Sylane back into the contest. Emmet Sweeney gathered possession before offloading to Creaven, who picked out Sean Newell. The forward made no mistake, blasting past Harry Mitchell to leave the minimum between the sides. It appeared Cillian Fahy had secured victory with a late point, but Shane Furey's dramatic response forced the game into extra time.

Pearses looked to have seized control during the opening period of extra time as Diarmuid Fahy, Dean Reilly and Cillian Fahy landed important scores. However, Tomás Keane and Keelan Creaven kept Sylane within touching distance, leaving them trailing 2-23 to 4-15. Late scores from Sean Newell and Keane ensured the sides were level once again at the interval in extra time.

Creaven and John Igoe edged Sylane back in front after the restart, only for Emmet Ward and Jonah Donnellan to restore parity. With the game hanging in the balance, Sylane broke forward at pace. Igoe turned provider, setting up substitute Conor Newell, who calmly slotted over what proved to be the winning point.

Pearses had one final opportunity to force penalties, but Diarmuid Fahy's late effort drifted agonisingly wide, allowing Sylane to celebrate a dramatic one-point victory and lift the Division Three League title.
