THE dust has settled on the most dramatic conclusion ever to a Galway senior football final. And for Salthill-Knocknacarra, they make their return to the Connacht championship this Sunday when they travel to take onLeitrim’s Ballinamore Sean O’Heslins (Carrick-on-Shannon, 1.30pm).

Tomo Culhane’s winning goal with virtually the last kick of the game dethroned Maigh Cuilinn two weeks ago giving the city side their fourth ever Frank Fox Cup.

The road beyond brings many happy memories to the Seasiders, even if they were beaten in the Connacht semi-final by Roscommon’s St. Brigid’s when they last played in the province in 2012.

Seven years earlier, they beat the same opposition in the final before marching on to All-Ireland glory. Current boss Finian Hanley was man of the match as they overcame Antrim’s St. Gall’s.

Salthill-Knocknacarra’s first foray in the Connacht championship also ended in success. Pat Comer captained them in 1990, and they beat Ballinamore (0-11 to 0-5) in the final.

Galway’s record against Leitrim teams is perfect with 10 wins from 10 encounters over the last 30 years. Maigh Cuilinn got over a slow start to run over Leitrim Gaels (4-13 to 1-9) in the 2025 semi-final.

But not all have been plain sailing and Sean O’Heslins (county champions for the 21st time) were only two points short of Mountbellew-Moylough when they met in 2021. Salthill-Knocknacarra will have to work for any result they take home from Páirc Sean Mac Diarmada.

Ballinamore beat Allen Gaels and Mohill before needing two days to win the county title. Goals from Tom Prior, Paul Moran and Paul Honeyman gave them a 3-14 to 0-15 replay victory over Fenagh St. Callins.

Prior and Honeyman are part of the Leitrim senior set-up, along with wing back Michael McKiernan. Cathal and Keelan McHugh are county under-20s.

Honeyman (2-17 in their last four games), leads the attack that includes Prior (2-10), Moran (1-11), Dillon Beirne and Brian Leyden. Keelan McHugh completes that group with Shane Moran and Niall McGovern forming the midfield alliance.

McKiernan will be joined by Michael McBrien and Cathal McHugh in the half back line; Dean McGovern, Brian Banks and Matthew Murphy will be behind them.

Keeper Mark Ahearne excelled on his senior debut the last day, but his place depends on the availability of regular stopper Darren Maxwell (knee). Louis Quinn, Conor Moran, Luke Murphy and Wayne McKeon are others available for Mark Henry’s side.

Picking Salthill-Knocknacarra’s starting 15 is more difficult. After wins against Oughterard and Corofin, they made four changes against Maigh Cuilinn (2-12 to 1-14), including Colm Finnerty (1-1), Paddy Kitt (0-1) and the superb Michael Kitt in midfield.

Captain Daniel O’Flaherty and Culhane didn’t start but shared 1-7 and are going to be hard to leave out for Hanley. Only six players started all six outings so far, keeper Ruairi Lavelle, Dara Conneely, Damien Kiely, Evan Wynne, John Maher and Robert Finnerty.

Lavelle will have Conneely, Kiely and Wynne in front of him; should O’Flaherty start, Aaron and Mark Mannion, and Paddy Kitt will battle for the other two half back positions. Maher will be joined by Michael Kitt or Niall Hanahoe in midfield.

Finnerty (5-28) is strongly supported by Matthew Thompson (0-13), Cathal Sweeney and Mikey Mullery on the ’40. Colm Finnerty, Robert Walzer, Brian Conlon and Culhane will battle for the other two jerseys.

And despite Charlie Power being out injured, Salthill-Knocknacarra have strength in depth from Cillian O’Toole, Jack Power, Daniel Hoare and Mikey Culhane.

Salthill-Knocknacarra will want to get through this fixture with little fuss. Defensive matches are key against a Sean O’Heslin forward unit full of capable scorers.

But with quality throughout, and resilience proven in their last two wins, Salthill-Knocknacarra should have enough to advance and potentially set up a mouth watering clash with St. Brigid’s the following weekend, providing the Roscommon side come through Sligo’s St. Mary’s on Saturday.

Verdict: Salthill-Knocknacarra
