McHugh ruled out of Galway job after committing future to Westmeath

WESTMEATH have re-appointed Mark McHugh as their senior football manager for the 2027 season which has ruled him out of taking charge of the Galway senior footballers.
McHugh’s reappointment as Westmeath manager rules him out of contention for the Galway senior football job for the 2027 season.
Last weekend, the Donegal native was priced at 5/1 by BoyleSports to become the next Galway senior football manager. However, there was no evidence to suggest that McHugh was a genuine candidate for the position, with his inclusion among the bookmakers’ potential contenders appearing to be the basis for the speculation.
The Donegal native has previously been involved with the Moycullen senior footballers in a coaching capacity, helping guide them to the Galway SFC final in 2024, where they came up short against Corofin.
McHugh is one of the most promising young managers in the game and enhanced his reputation considerably this year by leading Westmeath to Leinster Championship success for the first time since 2004. The Lake County recorded victories over Longford, Meath, Kildare and Dublin on their way to provincial glory.
Westmeath followed that up with a victory over Cavan in the opening round of the All-Ireland SFC before Galway edged past them in round two at Pearse Stadium. Their championship campaign eventually came to an end with defeat to Monaghan.
McHugh’s focus remains firmly on Westmeath, and understandably so given the potential within the reigning Leinster champions. He will be hoping to build on this year’s success and, in time, put himself in the frame for the opportunity to manage his native county Donegal.
