Let the games begin

OVER three months later than was scheduled, the Galway senior hurling championship will finally get underway this weekend.

The local derby tie between Loughrea and Tommy Larkins will get the action underway at Kenny Park on Friday evening (7pm), with a total of 12 games between senior A and B down for decision.

With no double headers and crowds restricted to only 200 – including players, team managements and club officials – there will be a surreal atmosphere at all the group matches.

The tie of the round is Saturday’s Pearse Stadium clash between heavyweights Turloughmore and last year’s defeated finalists Liam Mellows, but there is also a fascinating derby fixture involving the rising forces of Clarinbridge and Oranmore/Maree at the same venue on Sunday.

In our sports coverage this week, Stephen Glennon nails his colours to the mast in predicting the fortunes of the various clubs in a four-page special.
