Galway’s All-Ireland Minor Hurling Championship campaign came to an end in Ennis on Saturday evening as Limerick powered to an 1-26 to 1-15 victory and secured their place into the All-Ireland minor final for the first time since 2016.
Having arrived in Clare as Leinster champions following their remarkable comeback victory over Kilkenny, hopes were high that Kenneth Burke’s side could take another step towards national honours. However, Galway struggled to match Limerick’s intensity and sharpness throughout a contest in which the Munster runners-up looked the more composed and clinical team.
The Tribesmen had not played competitively since their dramatic Leinster final triumph four weeks earlier and that layoff appeared to leave them short of the match sharpness displayed by their opponents, who had already come through an All-Ireland quarter-final victory over Clare after losing the Munster final to Tipperary.
Galway made the perfect start when Anthony Poinard opened the scoring, but Limerick quickly seized the initiative through points from Shane Waters and Eamon O’Sullivan. The game’s defining moment arrived early when a Galway puckout was intercepted by Xavier Nelligan, who drove through the centre before firing past Mark Walsh to put Limerick firmly in control.
Despite that setback, Galway continued to battle. Eoghan McLearn and Michael Coen responded with important scores and, at times during the opening half, the Leinster champions threatened to work their way back into the contest. However, Limerick consistently found answers, with Waters proving particularly influential as he repeatedly punished Galway indiscipline and defensive lapses.
McLearn and Poinard helped reduce the deficit during the second quarter, but Galway struggled to contain Limerick’s attacking threat. Scores from Nelligan, O’Sullivan, Zach Bennis, Rian Horgan and Ryan Foley allowed the Shannonsiders to finish the half strongly and take a 1-12 to 0-9 lead into the interval.
Galway needed a positive start to the second half and Michael Coen’s accuracy from placed balls briefly offered encouragement. Two frees from the forward reduced the deficit, but Limerick quickly extinguished any hopes of a revival.
Bennis, Waters and Nelligan all found the target as the gap stretched once more, with Galway unable to generate the sustained momentum required to mount a serious comeback challenge.
To their credit, Burke’s side battled to the finish and were rewarded with a late goal from Gus Lohan. However, it proved only a consolation score on an evening when Limerick’s greater intensity, accuracy and physicality proved decisive.
While disappointment will be the immediate emotion, Galway can still reflect positively on a campaign that delivered a Leinster title and one of the most memorable comeback victories of the season. The experience gained by this talented group should stand to them as they progress through the ranks in the years ahead.
