Galway prove too strong for Offaly in Leinster Hurling Championship

Galway maintained their recent winning run over Offaly with a comfortable eleven point victory in round two of the Leinster Senior Hurling Championship on Sunday afternoon in Pearse Stadium. Although Offaly reduced the gap to four points on 55 minutes, the Tribesmen finished with a flourish and goals late on from Conor Cooney and Rory Burke sealed a second victory of the Leinster SHC campaign for the men in maroon and white.
The hosts made the sharper start and moved three points clear early on through Conor Whelan and Aaron Niland. Offaly responded through Dan Bourke and a long-range Liam Hoare free, but Galway soon regained control with scores from Jason Rabbitte, Whelan and Niland.
Despite some wasteful shooting from both teams, Galway carried a 0-13 to 0-10 lead into the break. Whelan was particularly influential in attack, while Hoare’s saves kept Offaly in touch after Galway created several first-half goal chances.
Galway pushed further ahead after the restart with Niland frees and points from Cathal Mannion and Padraic Mannion opening a seven-point gap. Offaly, however, showed spirit and substitute Oisin Kelly struck for a goal with his first touch to reduce the deficit and briefly raise hopes of a comeback.
Galway responded impressively in the closing stages. Cathal Mannion steadied matters from placed balls before goals from Conor Cooney and Rory Burke put the result beyond doubt. Burke and Mannion added late scores as Galway closed out a deserved win.
For Offaly, there were encouraging spells and they remained competitive for long stretches, but Galway’s greater depth and finishing power ultimately proved decisive.
