Galway United fail to land a knock-out blow on Bray

GALWAY United went to the hometown of boxing world champion, Katie Taylor, but were unable to land a knock-out blow on their hosts on Friday night to leave their league title hopes on the ropes.

United were on top in every round and were miles ahead on points, but in the end had to settle for just one point as their five-game winning run came to an end.

What was extended was league minutes without conceding a goal, with Conor Kearns setting a new club record of 516 minutes without conceding a goal, toppling Mark Cobey’s record of 491 minutes which was set at the end of the 1997/98 and start of the 1998/99 season.

The fact he did so with a much-changed United defence in front of him speaks volumes to the improvements United have made in recent weeks, and ordinarily a draw away to Bray Wanderers would be regarded as a decent return, but the poor start United made to the season means Friday’s result was a disappointing one in terms of trying to close the gap on Shelbourne.

John Caulfield made three changes to his side for this game from the win over Cobh Ramblers the previous week, and all three were enforced changes in the defence.

Chris Horgan and Stephen Walsh came into the full-back slots, with Joe Gorman stepping in beside Maurice Nugent at centre-back for his first start for the club after joining from Longford Town.
