City guaranteed place in football final as Salthill and St. James’ in big battle

THE city will be represented in the2013 county football final following the semi-final draw which pitted reigning champions Salthill/Knocknacarra against the rising force of St James’.
Having overcome St Michael’s by four points in the quarter-final at the weekend, St James’ must now lock horns with another city outfit as they strive to reach the senior final for the first time in the club’s brief history.
The youngest adult club in Galway, St James’ was formed in 1994 when the Mervue and Renmore clubs amalgamated in order to shore up a senior team for the east side of the city – they are now just an hour away from contesting the final.
St James’ will be pleased to have once again gotten one over St Michael’s, 0-14 to 1-7, but Frank Doherty and Co are well aware that serious improvement is needed – particularly in defence – if they are to continue their march towards Frank Fox Cup glory.
Standing in their way is the champions Salthill/Knocknacarra, who, despite stumbling through the championship to date, are still standing and are very much a force to be reckoned with. They can count themselves lucky to have escaped from Tuam with a one point win over Caltra on Sunday evening but that’s their second one-point victory on the trot – the other was against Tuam Stars – which shows Cathal McGinley’s men are not lacking in the hunger or character departments even if they look a little bit jaded so far this season.
