Breaks go Galway WFC’s way in convincing victory

AFTER slipping up when only collecting a point from their seasonal opener against Cork City, Galway WFC got the win they deserved in the Airtricity Women's National League on Saturday when they were largely in command of this encounter at Eamonn Deacy Park.
Now unlike in their first game when they threatened to score on numerous occasions, this was a more laboured affair as the goals were hard earned and, indeed, the opening two owed more to inefficiencies in the visitors’ rearguard, as the home side accepted the gifts on offer with a Rachel Kearns tap in and a sublime lobbed effort by young Kate Slevin.
A well worked Lynsey McKey close range finish sealed the win about the hour mark and while Bohemians did pull one back, they never really extended the home rearguard who got through this encounter with a fair degree of comfort.
Manager Billy Clery kept faith with the same starting eleven for the second game in succession and Galway WFC almost got the perfect start, but Slevin failed to apply the required finish to a McKey cross when firing wide.
The exchanges in the opening quarter were even enough as play fluttered from box to box without either goalkeeper being extended. Goalmouth action was scarce, before the home side should have taken the lead on 23 minutes when Chloe Singleton and Rachel Kearns combined to set up McKey, but she miskicked as a good opportunity was spurned.
Galway WFC made the breakthrough in rather fortuitous fashion on 29 minutes. A long ball by McKey sent Kearns chasing after possession, but the Mayo native was presented with a gift as goalkeeper Niamh Coombes and defender Jade Reddy clashed as they attempted to clear – the ball breaking into the path of Kearns who finished into an empty net for a 1-0 advantage.
