Blow for Galway United as Ryan departs

GALWAY United have been dealt an early blow ahead of the 2011 season with the news that goalkeeper Barry Ryan has signed for First Division side Limerick FC. Ryan, who was United’s captain in the 2010 season, lives in Ennis and became a father for the first time a couple of months ago.
He was known to be anxious to be as close to home as possible, but it has still come as a surprise that he has opted for a step down in divisions, although Limerick boss Pat Scully is building what looks, even at this early stage, to be a very decent squad to challenge for First Division honours next season.
United’s form dipped alarmingly during Ryan’s absence through suspension near the end of last season, and manager Sean Connor will have his work cut out for him to find a player of the calibre of Ryan to fill the crucial role of goalkeeper.
However the United boss has an impressive record of bringing top quality ‘keepers into the league, having a hand in introducing the likes of Richard Brush, John O’Hara Peter Cherrie to the League of Ireland.
Meanwhile the Galway United Supporters Trust has extended its ‘Budget Buster’ offer of season tickets for €99 due to public demand – it is understood that more than 100 season tickets have already been sold.
Application forms are available from, and can be returned to, O’Brien’s Newsagents on William Street and Claddagh and Celtic Jewellers on Quay Street. For further information, contact Ronan at (087) 6972823, or visit www.galwayunitedfc.ie.
The GUST will hold its Player of the Year Awards upstairs in Monroes Tavern on Dominick Street, next Friday, December 17, at 8pm. The December ‘Maroon Army’ members draw will also be held on the night. All United supporters, family and friends welcome.
