All to play for in final round of group action in Galway Premier Intermediate Hurling Championship

AFTER the second round in the Premier Intermediate Hurling Championship last weekend, Skehana-Mountbellew-Moylough and Ballinderreen secured their quarter-final places as group winners.
Meelick-Eyrecourt, Tynagh-Abbey-Duniry and Kilnadeema-Leitrim also have maximum points and are in the knockout stages. The latter two will play-off for Group 4 honours.
Kilconieron and Mullagh are also assured preliminary quarter-final places while eight other teams will battle for the remaining five spots in Round 3.
Despite having two defeats, Carnmore and Killimor will determine one spot, while their draw kept Ballygar and Rahoon-Newcastle in contention.
Unfortunately for Beagh, their second loss to Mullagh means they’ll contest relegation.
GROUP 1
SKEHANA-MOUNTBELLEW-MOYLOUGH 2-15 KILCONIERON 0-20
Cillian Roche’s injury time free sent Skehana-Mountbellew-Moylough into the final eight in Duggan Park on Friday.
A tough, physical affair that saw both teams finish with 14 players, goals from Roche and Sean McDonagh were equally decisive.
Kilconieron led 0-8 to 0-4 on the quarter hour but were 1-9 to 0-9 down at half-time as Oisín Lohan set up Roche for the first goal.
Kilconieron didn’t go away, even if McDonagh’s strike looked enough for Skehana-Mountbellew-Moylough.
Skehana-Mountbellew-Moylough’s Luke Tully and Kilconieron’s Peter Martyn were dismissed before points for Shane Caulfield and Ian McGlynn appeared to have saved a draw. However, Roche stepped up to secure the win.
MULLAGH 4-21 BEAGH 0-21
Mullagh delivered goals in New Inn on Sunday to advance to the knockout stages at the expense of relegation bound Beagh. The first came on 12 minutes with Dean Finnerty putting them 1-4 to 0-2 ahead.
Conor Dolphin added a second and despite two points each from Evan Hunt and Kevin Keehan, Beagh trailed 2-11 to 0-10 at half-time.
Keehan, Tommy McKeown and Callum Prendergast contributed during the third quarter, but Beagh’s fate was sealed when Dolphin, who finished with 2-9, got Mullagh’s next goal.
Liam Curley concluded with the last three-pointer and Mullagh will now battle Kilconieron for second place in Round 3.
GROUP 2
PORTUMNA 2-25 AHASCRAGH-FOHENAGH 0-29
Portumna overturned a poor first day loss to back on track in Duggan Park on Saturday with this two-point victory.
Declan McLaughlin’s 25th minute goal allowed Andrew Smith’s side a 1-14 to 0-16 interval advantage after the teams were level seven times.
The momentum swung regularly during the second period with Cathal Mannion pushing Ahascragh-Fohenagh back ahead before a Callum Keane goal and a superb Joe Canning point turned the tide again.
Mannion and Luke Kennedy gave Jimmy Browne’s men the lead again but late scores for Iarla Kelly and Keane secured Portumna the points. However, the narrow loss ensures Ahascragh-Fohenagh will still reach the knockout stages.
MEELICK-EYRECOURT 2-20 KINVARA 1-22
A Finn Gohery goal on 62 minutes saw Meelick-Eyrecourt clinch a stunning win in Loughrea on Saturday. Kinvara led 0-6 to 0-5 on the quarter hour before Niall Lynch’s crew replied with John Fleming’s goal.
However, Gerry Fahy’s charges got back through a Padraig Conole goal. But Meelick-Eyrecourt led 1-13 to 1-12 at half-time with Tiernan Gohery pointing three times.
With Conor Whelan, Darragh Helebert and Liam Martyn contributing, Kinvara regained the initiative and Helebert’s penalty point had them two up. However, Meelick-Eyrecourt had one last chance as Niall Fleming picked out Finn Gohery for the winner. A second win for them and a second loss for Kinvara.
GROUP 3
BALLINDERREEN 1-20 PÁDRAIG PEARSES 0-17
Ballinderreen ensured their last-eight spot on Saturday in Loughrea as Luke Prendergast’s goal six minutes from time ended Pádraig Pearses’ challenge.
The teams were all square before Keith Connolly’s charges pushed clear in the second quarter as Matthew O’Connor, Robbie Meehan and Donnacha Ganley helped them to a 0-13 to 0-8 interval lead.
Pearses stayed with their opponents afterwards with Jonah Donnellan converting frees and Harry Mitchell saving from Padraig Lafferty. But Shane Rafferty’s crew couldn’t close the gap.
When Prendergast blocked down an attempted Mitchell clearance before getting his goal, a second win for the south Galway side was secured.
BALLYGAR 0-20 RAHOON-NEWCASTLE 0-20
Ballygar produced a 10-point comeback in Tuam Stadium on Friday to maintain their title hopes.
Rahoon-Newcastle, led by Bertie Keane, went 0-11 to 0-5 ahead thanks to Bertie and Aaron Keane, David Hurley, Jordan Ruffley, Cian Cloherty and Matthew Murphy.
Kevin Hayes’ side were eight clear at the break before stretching 0-17 to 0-7 clear.
The wind was a major factor and Ballygar found them just six down in the closing moments.
Joey Wallace, Paddy Downey, Karl Healy, Cathal Maloney added for John Hanley’s team before Diarmuid O’Brien converted the equaliser to deny their city opponents and ensure both have something to play for in the final round.
GROUP 4
TYNAGH-ABBEY-DUNIRY 0-26 KILLIMOR 1-17
Tynagh-Abbey-Duniry produced another late surge to leave no doubts about this result in Loughrea on Sunday.
Mattie Kenny’s side were 0-15 to 0-13 down approaching the final quarter before doubling their tally with Padraig Breheny, Shane and Niall Moloney prominent on the scoreboard.
A second quarter led by Eoin McEvoy, Jack Kelly and Jack O’Meara had Killimor 0-11 to 0-10 ahead at half-time. Eoin Horan and Cian Treacy helped them go 0-15 to 0-13 up on 43 minutes.
But they only managed three more scores with O’Meara’s goal on 58 minutes leaving them just one behind. Tynagh-Abbey-Duniry were in full flow and finished with five unanswered points.
KILNADEEMA-LEITRIM 2-14 CARNMORE 0-18
Ten Colm Molloy points and goals from Jack O’Malley and Shane Lawless in Kenny Park on Friday proved enough to secure Kilnadeema-Leitrim a two-point victory.
Carnmore took an early 0-3 to 0-1 lead before Molloy replied with two points and set up Jack Kenny for a goal chance, the rebound knocked in by O’Malley.
Kilnadeema-Leitrim led 1-9 to 0-11 at half-time and it was 1-10 to 0-13 by the 40th minute before another two Molloy white flags coupled with Lawless’ goal put the victors six clear.
Danny Cummins, Collins and Tomás Higgins reduced the gap to one, but Molloy had the final say for Kilnadeema-Leitrim’s second win.
