Tynagh/Abbey-Duniry 4-21

Moycullen 0-13

TYNAGH/Abbey-Duniry maintained their unbeaten record in the hurling championship with a pillar to post success in this Senior B Group 2 contest at Pearse Stadium on Saturday evening.

Twelve points up at the break, Tynagh/Abbey-Duniry continued to build on their advantage on the resumption and with little resistance provided by Moycullen, they maintained their superiority until the long final whistle.

Following a win over Athenry and a draw with Abbeyknockmoy in their opening two games, they have now taken control at the top of the group, while for Moycullen, the outcome was hugely disappointing.

Going into this this game, they were unbeaten following draws with Abbeyknockmoy and Ardrahan, but on this occasion Moycullen never got out of the starting blocks. A dual club, almost half of the side are involved with the football team also and that means action on alternative weekends – and even at this stage that schedule is beginning to take its toll as a number of players who featured were carrying knocks from the previous week’s football win over Caltra.

However, this could not be seen as an excuse for what turned out to be a comprehensive Tynagh/Abbey-Duniry win  as they enjoyed the upper hand from the opening exchanges. Just the opening quarter could be seen as competitive, but once Michéal Dervan set up Thomas Gordon for their opening goal on 17 minutes, it allowed them to open a gap that just grew as the minutes ticked away.

Subsequently, Tynagh/Abbey-Duniry added 1-7 before the break as opposed to just two points for Moycullen, ensuring the outcome was already decided as they led by 2-11 to 0-5.

Thery were equally proficient on the resumption with another similiar tally, with Shane Moloney contributing an impressive 2-10, with 2-4 of that coming from play.

Working his way back from injury, Paul Killeen might have only seen some fleeting moments of county action during the summer, but on this occasion he gave every indication that he heading back to the impressive standards he previously set. Outstanding at right half back, a number of his interceptions were timely, while his deliveries were crucial in setting up a number of scores for a lively attack.
