The future for a planned mental health care unit at University Hospital Galway is uncertain, now that the City Council has refused to allow a new carpark be built.

The HSE West had applied for permission for the deck carpark at the hospital in Newcastle.

Planning permission was previously granted for a mental health unit at the rear of the hospital on the basis that a shortfall in car parking be addressed.

City planners have now refused permission for the new carpark, stating that it would go against the City Development Plan.

Councillor Padraig Conneely says the HSE and the City Council need to work together to iron out any issues.
