UHG study reveals link between coal and childhood asthma

Galway Bay fm newsroom – A study by University Hospital Galway has found a link between black smoke from carbon fuels and children in Galway city being admitted to hospital with asthma. The research was based on children in Galway between the ages of one and 14 years from 1985 to 2005. It found that the correlation was strongest in 1995 amongst children between one and four years old. The study also revealed that admissions rose steadily up to 1995, until ‘cleaner' coal became more widely available.
