A public meeting to discuss a boycott campaign on proposed household and septic tank charges will take place in Tuam tonight.

It's one of hundreds taking place throughout the country and is aimed at creating a national campaign of resistance to the new charges.

The proposed household charge will be set initially at 100 euro, however this is expected to rise in the coming years.

Rural dwellers with a septic tank will have to pay a 'once off' registration fee and 200 euro fee per inspection.

Spokesperson for the campaign Seán Byrne says the meeting is an opportunity for the people of Tuam to stand up to the Government.

Tonight's meeting will take place at 8 o'clock in the Corralea Hotel in Tuam.
