Galway’s traffic chaos is choking the city to death – and the only solution to this “total breakdown” has to include the proposed €650 million ring road to take cars out of the bottleneck.

That’s according to Galway City Council Chief Executive Brendan McGrath, who also said that the ring road plan will allow Galway to deliver on its full potential as the major employment hub and as the major growth centre along the West coast.

“Galway is choking to death. Our junctions are at capacity, we can’t put any more traffic in there. We need to get it out of there, we need to make it safer, we need to give our city back to its citizens,” he said.

If the proposed ring road is given the green light, it will result in the demolition of 44 residential properties, while a further ten homes will have to be acquired to make way for the scheme.

The development would also see the demolition of three commercial and two industrial properties – one property includes four buildings.

The development will dovetail with plans for a radical overhaul of public transport in Galway City – including restrictions on road use to buses, pedestrians and cyclists – which will be submitted to An Bord Pleanála in the first quarter of next year.

The proposed 18km route will include both single and dual carriageway and motorway, a new bridge and viaduct over the Corrib and two tunnels on the eastern side of the city.
