Thousands of homes and businesses in the Connemara area are without telephone and broadband due to a serious outage on the Eircom network.

The fault occurred at around 5.30 last evening and emergency crews are now working to establish a temporary fix.

It's understood the incident was caused by damage to an optic fibre line during road works in the Spiddal area.

It's estimated service will be restored by this evening to the affected homes and businesses in Furbo, Behagh, Barna, Inverin and Costello.

Spiddal was also affected by the outage, however it's understood phone services are now being restored there.

A spokesperson for Eircom says a temporary fix should be complete by evening, however a permanent fix to the problem will require new ducting and fibre.
