SUSPENDED SENTENCE FOR SETTING FIRE TO RAHOON HOUSE

Date Published: 25-Nov-2011
A 45 year old city woman has received a suspended sentence for deliberately setting fire to her semi-detached council house in Rahoon nearly four years ago.
Veronica McAnaspie, of 38 Tulach Ard, Rahoon appeared before Galway Circuit Criminal Court today.
Judge Raymond Groarke said he had viewed it as a very serious case but was satisfied that McAnaspie was not an evil person and did not appreciate the wrong she was doing.
He imposed a six year jail term backdated to 23rd May, suspending the entire balance of the sentence on condition she be of good behaviour for five years.
He also placed her under supervision of the probation service for a period of 3 years and under direct supervision of Tús Nua, where he said she must reside unless approval is received from the Probation Service.
McAnaspie was remanded in custody until the start of the suspended sentence at noon next Monday 28th November.
