Stolen car crashed after homeowner threatened with knife

A man was arrested and will be appearing before the courts in relation to an incident that began when a car was stolen near Galway city – after a woman was threatened by a male who had picked up a knife in the kitchen area of the house.
The incident occurred in the Bushy Park area – off the main Galway to Moycullen N59 road – when a man entered a house in Gortacleva, and threatened a woman, after picking up a knife from the kitchen.
He then demanded the keys of the car before driving off towards the main road but failed to make a right or left turn – the vehicle crossed the main carriageway and ploughed into a wall on the Glenlo Abbey Hotel side of the road.
Gardaí were on the scene shortly after and arrested a man at the scene on suspicion of drink driving – he was taken to Mill Street Garda Station in relation to the incident.
According to local sources, the man had attempted to gain entry to another house in the area just prior to the incident but the residents had refused him entry.
One local resident told the Connacht Tribune that ‘it was a miracle’ that the episode hadn’t ended with a catastrophic accident as the vehicle had driven straight across the main N59 roadway, knocking part of a wall on the opposite side.
A Garda spokesperson confirmed that a man had been arrested at the scene on the Tuesday night of February 13 last in relation to the incident on suspicion of drink driving and had been taken to Mill Street Garda Station in Galway city. Court proceedings are expected to follow over the coming weeks.
