The largest windfarm in the State is to be built in Oughterard, now that planning permission has been granted.

An Bord Pleanála has granted permission to Coillte and SSE Renewables Ireland Limited for the 23 wind turbines at Seecon, Lettercraffore and Derrada.

The Board decided that as long as the development complies with certain conditions, it won't adversely affect the Connemara Bog Complex.

The Oughterard windfarm is expected to generate enough electricity to power 68 thousand households.
