'Sneaky' parking tickets branded unfair

Some 200 parking tickets have been issued to motorists parked along Whitestrand Road in Salthill so far this year.

The information was supplied by Galway City Council to Labour Party Councillor, Niall McNelis who said motorists were being unfairly ticketed.

Cllr McNelis said that people were unsure of the law in relation to parking at Whitestrand Road but his request for yellow lines or parking signs has been refused by the local authority.

“I have been inundated with people coming to me to complain about getting parking tickets at Whitestrand Road. There are no yellow lines and no signage saying that you cannot park there.

“However, there is a continuous white line in the middle of the road and, according to road traffic legislation, vehicles cannot park on a section of roadway where a continuous white line has been provided.

“The problem is, not many drivers know of this, so it’s unfair. They park there in good faith and get tickets. I’ve asked the Council to put in signage but have been told that ‘no consideration is being given’ to this,” he said.

Cllr McNelis has made representations to the City Council about the matter and he also raised this issue at the most recent meeting of the City Joint Policing Committee.
