The average length of stay for cancer patients attending University Hospital Galway must be reduced.

That's one of the findings of a new study published by the Irish Medical Journal which examines acute cancer beds and admissions.

82 charts were examined from cancer patients attending UHG over a three day period in May 2009 as part of the review.

The report recommends that there is considerable potential to make more appropriate use of UHG for cancer patients with particular reference to reducing bed days and developing integrated systems of discharge planning.
