The Regional Health Forum West is calling on the Government to ensure that the air service to the Aran Islands is not diminished by proposed budget cutbacks.

The motion, proposed by city councillor Catherine Connolly, was passed unanimously by members at a meeting of the forum at Merlin Park yesterday.

Seconded by county councillor Mary Hoade, the meeting heard that the issue is so serious that the Island's GP is among those to criticise the move.

A committee for the Aran Air Service is holding a press conference in Dublin today.

They say education, health services and businesses will suffer on the Aran Islands if government funding for the service is reduced.
