A new course to be run in Portumna is leading the way in opening-up college access to unemployed and low-income earners throughout rural county Galway.

That's according to Minister of State for Education, Training and Skills and Galway East TD Ciaran Cannon, who is to officiate at the launch the "Pathway to College" programme which is led by Galway Rural Development Company.

The official launch of the free one-day-a-week course takes place in O'Meara's Bar in Portumna at 7 this evening.

Minister Cannon told Galway Bay fm news that it's an innovative approach to promote further education to Galway's newly unemployed and for early school leavers.

He says it will encourage many rural people throughout the county to begin the journey back to education
