PORTIUNCULA HOSPITAL'S SURGERY TO BE LIMITED TO COMPLEX PROCEDURES

Date Published: 06-Jun-2008
Surgery at Portiuncula Hospital in Ballinasloe is to be limited to complex procedures only in the near future.People looking for basic surgical procedures at Portiuncula Hospital will now have to make the trip to Roscommon Hospital instead.A HSE review of surgical and anaesthetic services at both hospitals has concluded that the best way for both hospitals to retain a level of service is to work together.Previous to this Portiuncula had operated independently with its own Consultant general surgeon but the HSE say advances in clinical care and increasing levels of specialisation make this model of care un-sustainable.While Portiuncula will still carry out the more complex surgeries, which average about 3 a week, it has been decided that Roscommon will take on all other types of surgery.
