Gardaí are preparing a file to be sent to the DPP following the tragic death of a Galway man in a city bar during a local elections celebration.

Liam Horan of Mervue died in University Hospital Galway yesterday morning.

The man had been celebrating in Crowes Bar, Bohermore in the early hours of yesterday morning when an altercation started which led to Mr Horan falling to the floor.

Mr Horan, in his sixties and a native of Bohermore, had been part of the Crowe family election celebration – licencee Ollie Crowe and his brother Michael, both Fianna Fáil, were re-elected onto the Galway City Council.

Mr Horan’s brother, Jimmy, who lives in the Westside, stood in the Galway City Central area as an Independent candidate. He received 24 first preference votes.

It is thought that a row, relating to the elections, broke out between Mr Horan and another customer leading to an alleged assault at about 2am.

The alarm was raised when Mr Horan didn’t get up after hitting his head on a table and falling onto the floor. CPR was administered by another customer for about 15 minutes before Mr Horan was brought to University Hospital Galway in an ambulance at about 2am on Monday.

He died at 6.50am at UHG, apparently of a heart attack.
