There has been a 23 percent drop in the number of burglaries in the city so far this year.

That's according to figures presented by Gardai at today's Joint Policing Committee meeting where many members disputed the decline.

City Councillor Declan McDonnell said he didn't agree with the figure and believed people may not be reporting the growing volume of burglaries in many estates across the city.

Cllr Terry O'Flaherty also questioned the figure and said there has been a spate of burglaries in Mervue and Renmore happening early in the day.

This was supported by Councillor Billy Cameron who said the gardai should consider a blitz in the west side of the city where many elderly people are afraid to open their door.

He said residents in the Corrib Park, Camelon Park and Coogan Park areas have been badly hit recently by a minority of individuals.

However, speaking to Galway Bay fm news, Chief Superintendent Michael O'Sullivan says burglary crimes in the city are a key focus of city based "Operation Aimsir"
