The plan to conserve the city's medieval walls is now on public display.

It sets out a path for the future care for the walls with the objective of increasing the public awareness of this part of Galway's heritage.

The biggest section of the walls are in the Eyre square shopping centre which is on private land, while another long section is at the Spanish Arch.

The walls were one of the most prominent monuments built by the corporation and various elements such as the great gates and towers gave Galway a strong urban character.

The draft Galway city walls conservation management and interpretation plan is now available to view online at the city council website and at City Hall on College Road.

Heritage office at Galway City council Jim Higgins says the plan aims to make the city walls more accessible to the public.
