Oranhill residents gather at site of the big hole over concerns about latest works
Galway Bay fm newsroom - Residents of the Oranhill estate are planning a protest to call for adequate safety works to be carried out in the area.
Following a long-running campaign, diggers arrived in the Oranmore based estate this week to begin safety work on a deep excavation which, residents say, poses a serious safety risk.
The controversial hole had originally been dug up some years ago in preparation for the construction of a commercial centre which was never built.
The site is currently surrounded by partially collapsed hoarding with a reduced pathway.
However, residents fear that this week's work will only involve the construction of a parameter fence and that the hole will not be levelled as had been anticipated.
Residents gathered at the site this evening to discuss further action.
Spokesperson for the local residents Michelle Frowley says the safety of the local residents and their children should be paramount.
