One point seven million paid to turf cutters in Galway
Galway Bay fm newsroom - The Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht have paid out 1 point 7 million euro to turf cutters in Galway under the cessation of turf cutting scheme.
729 applications have been received from Galway, and as of last Friday 93 deliveries of turf were made to homes in the county.
13 bogs including the Baroughter bog, Clonmoylan bog, Carrownagappul bog and Monivea bog are included in the scheme.
The Department also says there was a 45 percent reduction in turf cutting on 53 raised bogs across the country where turf cutting is banned.
However, spokesperson for the Turf cutters and contractors association and Roscommon South Leitrim TD Luke Ming Flanagan is disputing these figures.
