The number of students dropping out of secondary school is slightly higher in the City when compared to the County.

Figures published by the Department of Education reveal a 91.86 % retention rate at schools across the county when compared to 88.3% in the city.

However, those Galway figures, taken from Leaving Cert classes at State schools in 2005, are within the national average.

The number of students dropping out of secondary school has now reached it's lowest ever rate - at 10.6 per cent.

That's well below the EU average for early school leavers which now stands at 14 per cent.
