NUMBER OF COUNTY ROAD DEATHS MORE THAN DOUBLES

Date Published: 21-Dec-2011
The number of people killed on the county's roads has more than doubled this year.
The latest Garda figures show that 13 people were killed in 12 collisions between January 1st and December 9th.
The figures represent an increase of 140 percent since last year but Chief Superintendent of Galway Garda District Donal Ó Cualáin says the figure for road deaths last year was historically low.
While there was a decrease of almost a quarter in the number of drink driving incidents in the county this year - the Chief Super says alcohol is still a factor.
He added that other contributing factors to road crashes are speed and road conditions.
