NUIG LIFE COURSE BUILDING GETS APPROVAL DESPITE APPEAL

Date Published: 03-Sep-2012
NUI Galway has been granted permission to construct a Life Course Studies Building on the Upper Newcastle Road in the city.
It follows an appeal to An Bord Pleanala by the owners of a nearby house.
Permission had been granted by the City Council in August 2011, for a two and three storey building to be located on the northern end of the campus.
The development sets out to accommodate three existing research centres -Ageing, Children & Family and Disability.
However owners of a nearby house lodged an objection with concerns that the building would be excessively dense and fails to respect the open character of the Newcastle area.
They also felt there would not be enough car parking, which could result in people parking their cars on residential roads in the vicinity.
