NUI Galway has confirmed it does not use debt collection agencies and has not taken legal action regarding unpaid fees.

In a statement, the university says it is sympathetic to cases of student hardship and operates a financial aid fund for students.

The Union of Students in Ireland is hitting out at some universities for hiring debt collectors to chase down student fees.

The Irish Independent says University College Dublin is following in the footsteps of the University of Limerick - who have already used a debt collecting agency.
