Noel Crowley memorial 5-a-side fun tournament
Date Published: 17-Dec-2012
West United is holding a 5-a-side tournament at the OLBC Sports Hall on Sea Road on Friday, December 28 in memory of former player, Noel Crowley, who died in January.
The Noel Crowley Memorial Tournament is open to all past and present members of West United, as well as friends of the late Noel, a number of whom are coming out of retirement to take part in the tournament.
Entry is €10 per player, and teams will be made in advance by the organisers for what is intended as a fun event. The tournament will kick off at noon, and the prize-giving will take place afterwards in Monroe’s Tavern on Dominick Street.
The closing date to enter your name to take part is this Friday, December 21 – to register for the tournament, call Mike O’Toole 087 on 6266502, Ger O’Connell on 087 7852817, or William Grant on 087 6958781.
Noel died on January 5 in the very house he was born in on Henry Street. He played for a number of decades with West, and was on the only Galway side to win the Oscar Traynor Cup, back in 1971, but turned down an opportunity to become a soccer star in the League of Ireland because he needed to stay at home to mind his ailing father.
For 21 years he worked in the Accounts Office of Corrib Printers. Before that he had worked in O’Gorman’s printing company, and he also worked with the Connacht Tribune group.
He was also a volunteer with the Notre Dame de Lourdes annual pilgrimage.
