NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH COULD DETER OIL THEFT IN TUAM

Setting up a 'neighbourhood watch' in areas around Tuam could deter thieves from stealing home heating oil.

At a meeting of the Joint Policing Committee in Tuam this week, Inspector Michael Dwyer said if any area wants to set up such a scheme, they can contact Tuam Garda Station.

It was also pointed out that it would be helpful in the prevention of such crimes as the theft of home heating oil which was currently prevalent in the Tuam area.

Councillor Tom Reilly said that thieves had devised a method of stealing the oil by drilling a hole in the bottom of the tank using a small battery operated drill and inserting a tube and that could empty the tank in ten minutes.
